Abraham Lincoln was born Feb. 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky. He was born in a log cabin and lived in log cabins throughout most of his childhood. His mother was Nancy Lincoln and his father was Thomas Lincoln.
Thomas Lincoln was a Baptist and attended church religiously. His father was totally against slavery of any kind and that caused some debt in the Lincoln family. When Abe was around seven years of age, his family was forced to move. The family moved to what is now Spencer County, Indiana.
Abe had a lot of rough things happen right before he turned ten years old. His mother Nancy died of a "milk sickness." He also lost his brother when the he was born. Abe was distraught after his mom died. He did not have a close relationship was his dad anymore. "I remember my mothers prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me for life" (Abraham Lincoln, iheartinspiration.com and many other sites and books. )
Then Thomas Lincoln met a widow named Sarah Bush Johnston. She loved Abe and Abe liked her. "All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother" (Abraham Lincoln, netplaces.com and http://quotationsbook.com Quote 44526. ) She showed him how much fun reading was. After that Abe was always glued to a book. He read hers and the library's books. Abe only had approximately eighteen months of education as a child. It was not daily either. Sometimes he would go for a week or a month or two weeks. It changed frequently. It all added up to eighteen months.
In eighteen-thirty, the Lincoln family moved again! They moved to Illinois and Abe helped his father build a new log cabin. It is said that Abraham Lincoln was great with an axe. Soon after, he decided that he wanted to set off by himself now and explore the world. But that is a whole different story...
